Frequently Asked Questions

What is Probiorinse?

A buffered saline nasal irrigation solution that is enhanced with probiotics.

What are probiotics?

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines probiotics as “living bacteria that promote health”.

Does Probiorinse contain probiotics?

Probiorinse contains the probiotic Lactococcus lactis W136, which has a long history of use in the food industry and is ‘generally regarded as safe’

Are the bacteria in Probiorinse live?

Yes, they are.  Live Lactococcus lactis W136 bacteria are freeze-dried in a process called lyophilisation and come back to life when reconstituted with water.

Are there other probiotic nasal irrigations available?

Not to our knowledge. We believe we are the first on the market.

How is Probiorinse used?

It is used exactly like nasal irrigation. A 240 ml irrigation bottle such as a NeilMed Sinus Rinse is filled with clean lukewarm water is used for nada l irrigation according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Is Probiorinse safe?

The bacteria used in ProbioRinse, Lactococcus lactis W136, has been consumed orally by humans for hundreds of years and has ‘generally recognized as safe, status. It has not been shown to produce untoward effects in safety studies.  While probiotic bacteria in the nose are new, there are other published studies of administration of bacteria to the nose. None of these have reported any toxicity of side effects.

Why fourteen days of treatment?

It makes sense to add bacteria over a period of time, rather than single administration, so as to offer continued support to the microbiome as the body recovers.

How does Probiorinse give a beneficial effect?

Probiorinse has all of the expected benefits of nasal and sinus irrigation on nasal congestion, secretions, and feelings of nasal congestion.

Can Probiorinse be used continuously?

While Probiorinse was studied in a fourteen-day period, there is no evidence to suggest that longer treatments would be dangerous.
